It’s a rare treat to actually see Samuel Beckett’s plays, rather than simply reading them in that cool Grove Centenary edition that I’m sure you all have. Luckily, once a year, Custom Made Theatre does a six-performance workshop production of some of his work. This year, they’re doing:
- Rough for Theatre I. The blind literally lead the lame in this funny, ironic walk towards the end.
- Footfalls. A woman paces the stage speaking to an older woman who is perhaps her mother, perhaps a ghost, perhaps nothing at all.
- Come and Go. Three women share a park bench reminiscing about what was and what might not be.
Best of all, it gives an excuse to post a picture of Beckett, who had one of the greatest faces of any playwright ever. How could you not be inspired to write with that photo over your desk?
