Chestnuts Bringing In Tons O’ Dough

Ever wonder why theater companies keep doing “The Nutcracker” and “A Christmas Carol” over and over and over and over and over? It is, of course, all about the money. But I had no idea just how much money:

In its 2 1/2-week run of “Nutcracker,” San Francisco Ballet earns 43 to 45 percent of its total ticket revenue for the year — about $6.5 million.

ODC/Dance, which recently completed its 21st holiday run of “The Velveteen Rabbit,” pulls in $225,000 to $235,000 with that annual revival — double the box office take from the rest of the season.

Interestingly enough, A.C.T. has actually lost $100,000 on “A Christmas Carol” since 2005. Go figure.
