One of the perks of being on the literary committee at the Magic Theatre is that you get to attend early staged readings of new works-in-progress by some pretty incredible writers. Yesterday I saw two new works by Edna O’Brien, the Irish novelist, screenwriter and playwright. Her words are lyrical and poetic, and it was a pleasure to get a chance to listen. (Especially with the brilliant actors who were reading cold.) One of the highlights for me was hearing Edna herself read a beautiful 20-minute monologue; I’ve written before about how amazing it is to hear playwrights read their own work, and this one was particularly well-suited for that kind of presentation.
