I got an invitation today to submit to Just Theater’s first New Play Development Lab. This group looks to be a powerhouse right out of the box, featuring a few people I know to be great, including Aaron Loeb, Jonathan Spector and Molly Aaronson-Gelb. The group is just what the Bay Area (and the rest of the country, for that matter) needs. According to the email:
There are a multitude of play-development programs for plays that are already written (e.g. the Bay Area Playwrights Festival, O’Neill Playwrights Conference) as well as programs to create short work very quickly (PlayGround). There are, however, few long-term development programs outside of universities that support the playwright in the actual process of writing the first draft of a play. Our model is the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, which to our knowledge is the only other program like it in the country.
That’s a good model. I’m definitely planning to submit a proposal.
